Health, Literature and Women in Twentieth-Century Turkey offers
readers fresh insight into Turkish modernity and its discourse on
health, what it excludes and how these potentialities manifest
themselves in women’s fiction to shape the imagination of the
period. Starting from the nineteenth century, health gradually
became a focal topic in relation to the future of the empire, and
later the Republic. Examining representations of health and illness
in nationalist romances, melodramas and modernist works, this book
will explore diseases such as syphilis, tuberculosis and cancer,
and their representation in the literary imagination as a tool to
discuss anxieties over cultural transformation. This book places
Turkish literature in the field of health humanities and identifies
the discourse on health as a key component in the making of the
Turkish nation-building ideology. By focusing on the place of
health and illness in canonical and non-canonised fiction, it opens
a new field in Turkish literary studies.

Ramadan, the month of fasting, Doesn't begin all at once. It begins
with a whisper And a prayer And a wish. Muslims all over the world

the month of fasting as the most special time of year. This lyrical
and inspiring picture book captures the wonder and joy of this
great annual event, from the perspective of a child. Accompanied by
Iranian inspired illustrations, the story follows the waxing of the
moon from the first new crescent to full moon and waning until Eid
is heralded by the first sighting of the second new moon. Written
and illustrated by Muslims, this is a book for all children who
celebrate Ramadan and those in the wider communities who want to
understand why this is such a special experience for Muslims.

"Myth or Reality" presents in simple language the case of Asian
Americans in California. Case studies and episodes are presented in
a theoretical context of language minority students' adjustment to
mainstream cultures. The high levels of expectation and the
achievement motivation of many Asian Americans has added to the
myth of success of all Asian populations in the United States. The
authors use data that calibrates the differential success of
various Asian populations, and the need to assist those who are
less successful. Asian minorities at risk, the role of teachers in
preventing delinquency, and the recommendations to teachers bring
the book to practical concerns of educators and policy makers. It
is aimed at undergraduate courses in education, anthropology,
sociology, political science and psychology.

Since the late 1980s, Renee Green's multifaceted practice has
imagined and expanded the ways in which art can surface and give
form to underwritten histories, collective memory, and circuits of
cultural exchange. Her writing, installations, films, digital
media, and sound works continue to trace and interrogate the power
of cultural institutions and their relationships to language,
knowledge, and constitutions of selfhood, while at the same time,
indicating other ways of being and becoming. Green's work came to
prominence and circulated within the social and political flows
between the world and the Americas, a concept that includes the
United States, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
Her practice continues to investigate the distribution and relay of
art and ideas, and how these are braided with histories of
migration and legacies of displacement, and the aesthetic forms and
poetics that stem from these. In one of most comprehensive
catalogues of her work since 2010, Inevitable Distances presents
recent writing on Green's work with some of Green's early texts and
influences. Indicating the encounters and distances travelled in a
life's journey, both this publication and the exhibition it
catalogues puts her artistic production into a speculative and, at
times, fictional constellation. This book is co-published by DAAD
Artists-in-Berlin Program, Berlin; Hatje Cantz; and KW Institute
for Contemporary Art.

"Come with the pilgrims as they set out on a journey, a journey of
patience to the city of Mecca." We are led on the journey of a
lifetime to the city of Mecca - the pilgrimage known to Muslims as
the Hajj. The pilgrims walk with heads bare and feet in sandals;
they call to Allah; they kiss or point to the Black Stone, as the
Prophet did. Arriving at Mecca, they surge round the Ka'aba, shave
their heads and travel to Mount Arafat. Finally, though their
bodies are tired and aching, their spirits are uplifted, knowing
that with thousands of others they have performed the sacred
pilgrimage. This is a window on to a sacred journey for Muslims the
world over - beautifully described and illustrated for younger
children.
When Ali first meets Amirah, he notices everything about her - her
hijab, her long eyelashes and her red trainers - in the time it
takes to have one look, before lowering his gaze. And, although Ali
is still coming to terms with the loss of his mother and exploring
his identity as a Muslim, and although Amirah has sworn never to
get married, they can't stop thinking about each other. Can Ali and
Amirah ever have a halal 'happily ever after'?
A highly topical look at how and why Islamophobia manifests itself
and at what can be done to make our society a safe space for us
all. Islamophobia is a form of religious prejudice aimed at Muslims
and it is on the rise. But not everyone agrees that Islamophobia
exists - and some people think that we should be afraid of Muslims
and Islam. This book, aimed at young readers aged 10 and upwards,
aims to encourage a conversation about Islamophobia - what it is,
where it comes from and what can be done to stand against it. It
shares the perspectives of those who have faced discrimination due
to their faith, and takes a frank look at the frontlines of hate
crime where Islamophobia is found - in the media, in politics and
in daily interactions. The authors talk about their experiences of
religious discrimination and anti-Muslim hate crimes, look at how
international politics can affect ordinary people, and discuss what
can be done to make our society a safe space for us all.
A personal story of the author reflecting on her journey of life
with references to quotes from the Qur'an, Hadith and contemporary
thinkers.
